I am currently attending an online college and a friend of mine told me that a lot of businesses will not accept online degrees, that they aren’t accredited. I was wondering if anyone has received a degree from an online college and had no problems getting a job. I am going for my degree in medical administration. Any help here would be appreciated. I am attending online because I am a stay at home mother.

My wife got a master’s in math education from Walden University. They are accredited and her school district accepted the degree. You never said what online college you are attending so I don’t know for sure if they are accredited.

EDIT: It would be very difficult to get a federal loan for a non-accredited school! Your friend may be thinking of those e-mails we all get from diploma mills, where you pay for a fake degree. Good luck with your schooling!

Some are accredited, while others are not. And objectively, a degree from a conventional college weighs much more in the interview arena than an online degree. Medical administration? You are best off attending a real college for that, and it is ridiculous- I wholly sympathize with you- that as tuition prices skyrocket, that a cheaper way out which ultimately can be used to the extent that a real college can be, is worth less. Realistically, you friend is probably right on this one. You might want to check it out for yourself and see if any of your online credits will transfer over to a nearby community college.

So based on the statement of a friend, you start to worry?
First, one of the primary objectives of education is the ability to research things. If you are concerned about the accreditation of the school, there are easy ways to fnd out. First, the catalog. Second, the website. Third, the Dean of academics office has a phone and email.
Now, an easy clue is to know if they participate in any federal financial sid programs. If so, then they are duly accredited by an agency approved to so by the US Dept of Ed. This could be one of the 6 regional accreditors, or one of a few ‘national’ accreditors. There is NO difference.
I have an online degree. It is regionally accredited. I get crap all the time……… I do not listen.
