Distance Learning/online Degree Program Resources: Are There Any Decent Ones?
Posted by hairy8684 under November[4] Comments
I’ve been looking around, and have had very little luck in finding any sort of resource for finding out what universities offer distance learning degree programs, esp. in the sciences. Most of them seem to be firmly in the pockets of the big online degree mills, such as Phoenix and Strayer Universities, and have been of no real use.
Do to my professional career, the more traditional degree programs just aren’t an option, and so far have only found one university in the US that offers a BS in Mathematics via distance learning (Chadron State College), so posting here in hopes someone can either direct me to a good search engine for this, or perhaps even give pointers to specific universities.

There are some that aren’t completely advertising supported by the for profits.
Program search engine: Peterson’s http://www.petersons.com/distancelearnin… and USNews http://www.usnews.com/directories/e-lear…
Discussion boards: Degreeinfo – http://forums.degreeinfo.com/ and Degree Discussion – http://www.degreediscussion.com/forums/
Ratings and “Best Buys” – Geteducated.com http://www.geteducated.com/
News etc. – eLerning Pundit http://www.elearningpundit.com/
Note: UoP, Strayer, etc. are not “degree mills” – a degree mill is a different animal altogether. These for profits may not be the best academics out there but they’re far better than the true degree mills.
For math take a look at (in addition to Chadron State):
Ellis College – NYIT
SUNY – Empire State
Northern Arizona U
St Mary of the Woods
U Illinois – Springfield
U Illinois – Urbana
Math just isn’t one of those areas a lot of people are clamoring to study online.

University of London External program is by far the best and most reputable, especially London School of Economics (aka LSE). It’s recognized internationally, and it’s a 3 year degree program (if you do it full time) and you have up to 8 years to complete the degree, and it’s only about $8,000 for the 3 years (excluding books and testing fees at the center you take the test), I personally am taking BSc (bachelor of science) Management.

How are online law degrees looked upon when you are searching for employment at an established law firm? I would think it would be a little bit of an obstacle to overcome.
